Asta-i buna!

It is the funerary stupa of Goryeo Period remaining at the Godalsa Temple site. It is not known whose sarira has rested there. Godalsa Temple was founded in the 23rd year (764) of King Gyeongdeok in United Silla Kingdom, and remained as a grand temple thanks to the protection of kings since King Gwangjong. But it is not clear when the temple was shut down. The stupa is octagonal and stands at a corner of the wide temple site. Most parts remain except head decorations at the top. The pedestal supporting the whole weight is composed of three parts. And carvings at middle stone particularly attract attention. The middle stone is almost round rather than octagonal, and two tortoise-shaped figures carved on the surface feel real thanks to their cubic expression. Four dragons are carved and tortoises are carved between every two dragons, and the rest space is filled with cloud design. The designs filling the stone surface are expressed so refined and unexaggeratedly that we can feel the boldness and proficiency from them. The first and third stones have gracious design of lotus flowers. A figure of a door and the image of Sacheonwangsang (the Four Guardian Kings) are carved on the body of the stupa, but the carving of lock image on the door is so flat that it seems to be carved perfunctorily. The roof stone covering the stupa body is fairly thick, and the eight corners of the upper face are also thick. A large flower carving clings to the end of each corner. But they are so thin compared with the size that the decorating effect is little. A canopy that looks like a miniaturized roof is resting on a round stone at the top of the roof. The stupa seems to have been built in about 10th century of the early Goryeo Period in that it faithfully follows the standard form of Silla on the whole and shows the characteristic techniques of Goryeo in each carving at the same time. The skill of trimming stones is excellent, and carvings are refined. The stupa is magnificent among octagonal ones.
